An inspiring artist from Shandong, praised by the international art community

Hailed as one of China’s most important people of the last 40 years, Zhou Shichao’s work in contemporary Asian impressionism style has been collected in over 20 countries around the world, including Vatican City.

Presentation

With an active presence in Europe, Zhou Shichao has drawn attention from art critics to art promoters and as widespread as the fashion circles. In the past 30 years, Zhou has held more than 50 solo and joint exhibitions in China and abroad. In 2012, he was rated by Claude Darras, a famous French publisher and art reviewer, as one of the most valuable painters worldwide since the 18th century.

The book “40 Years, 40 People” was published in China at the beginning of 2019 and named Zhou as one of the countries 40 most important people. To mark the 40th anniversary of China’s 40 years of reform and expansion (1978–2018), this book brings together 120 witness from more than 20 countries, nearly 100 industries to tell their own life stories.

In his article selected for this book – “My Paintings Go Global” – Monart artist, Zhou Shichao reflects on how Chinese artists were recognized and praised by the international art community during those 40 years.

Biography

Zhou Shichao was born in Qingdao, Shandong Province in 1965. He graduated from the Shandong College of Arts in mural paintings in 1989 and continued teaching at the same college. In the same year, he began to develop his painting career. In 1991, his artist career began with the “Cognition and Participation”, a joint exhibition held at Shandong University. During the past 30 years, Zhou Shichao has been held more than 50 solo and joint exhibitions in China and abroad.

In 2008, “Spirit of the Year 2008 – Zhou Shichao Oil Painting Exhibition” was held at the YI Shanghai Art Museum. As a part of the promotion for the Olympic Games 2008, the exhibition was highly valued by the Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games. At the beginning of the exhibition planning, Zhou stood out from more than ten prestigious Chinese painters and his paintings became known internationally due to the success of this exhibition. In 2009, he was invited by French, Italian and other European art institutions and universities to visit for art exchange and communication. In October 2010, by invitation from Mr. Claude Gaudin, Mayor of Marseille, France, Zhou held a solo exhibition “The Sunrise of Marseille” at the Marseille Contemporary Art Center. He was the first Chinese artist invited by the government of Marseille to hold a solo exhibition at the Governmental Art Center. On October 17th , he visited Shanghai alongside the French government delegation and attended the National Present Exchange Ceremony. Zhou’s work, “The Morning of Shanghai”, was presented by the Chief of French delegation, Mr. Rolland, to the government of Shanghai.

As a continuation of “The Sunrise of Marseille” in China, in November 2011, Zhou and the famous French artist Guy Toubon held a joint exhibition “The Light of Marseille” at the Beijing Oriental Art Center, which was once again supported by the two countries’ governments. He was appointed by the chairman of the Higher Education Institute of United Nations, Pierre-Jean GIRE, as a member of an expert group at the Higher Education Institute of UN. “The Sunrise of Marseille” and “The Light of Marseille” were regarded as the two lighthouses for Sino-French cultural exchange…”, the press reported.

In January 2016, the “Sea Breeze” – Zhou Shichao Oil Painting Exhibition was held at the Qingdao Academy of Arts. In November, the “Golden Time” – Zhou Shichao Oil Painting Exhibition was hosted at the Yacht Club de Monaco. He became the first Chinese Artist to hold such an exhibition in the Yacht Club de Monaco. The success of this exhibition led to recognition from the European elite. Zhou is regarded as the ambassador of a new trend in Chinese contemporary art.

In April 2017, the “Designing Inspiration of Paper Art” exhibition was held at the Jiajian Art Museum. In May, the “Moonlight” – Zhou Shichao Oil Painting Exhibition was hosted at the Qingdao City Art Museum.

In January 2018, the “Ramble 2018” exhibition of Zhou Shichao’s Small-sized Oil Painting was held at the Qingdao Taipingwan Contemporary Art gallery. In April, the “Ramble in the Spring” – Zhou’s artworks exhibition was hosted at the Qingdao Tianyi Haiwan Exhibition Center. In May, the “Rust Material Project” – Zhou & his students’ mixed media artworks exhibition was hosted at the Rushi Artwork Place.

October 2010
Invited by Mr. Claude Gaudin, Mayor of Marseille, France, Zhou held a solo exhibition “The Sunrise of Marseille” at the Marseille Contemporary Art Center.

November 2011
Zhou Shichao and the famous French artist Guy Toubon held a joint exhibition, “The Light of Marseille” at the Beijing Oriental Art Center.

2012
Zhou Shichao was rated by Claude Darras, famous French publisher and art reviewer, as one of the most valuable painters since the 18th century around the world.

2013
“Zhou Shichao – Oil Painting Exhibition” was held at the Stanmanian Art Center in Marseille, France. Zhou Shichao was also invited to visit the headquarters of Ferragamo in Italy and there he launched a limited-edition scarf in cooperation with the Ferragamo group.

January 2016
The “Sea Breeze” – Zhou Shichao Oil Painting Exhibition was held at the Qingdao Academy of Arts. In November, the “Golden Time” – Zhou Shichao Oil Painting Exhibition was hosted at the Yacht Club de Monaco.
